5 Types of People Who Can Benefit Enormously from Meditation

If you think meditation is just for Tibetan monks or priests, think again. These 5 types of people can benefit tremendously from meditating:

1. Heart patients

Many people are aware of the link between high blood pressure, heart attacks, and stress, but did you know meditation has been shown to be a useful part of cardiovascular risk reduction? While meditation cannot replace a heart rehabilitation program, it is a powerful supplement that heart patients should consider incorporating into their lives during and after recovery from heart-related illness or disease.

2. Teachers

In a recent teacher survey, 46% of teachers reported having high levels of daily stress. Add in the mass school shooting of late and that number is likely higher today. What’s a teacher to do? While educators cannot simply abandon their jobs or their passion for teaching, they can calm their nerves and dramatically reduce their stress by practicing mindfulness for a few minutes a day, every day. No time? Bring it into your classroom for added benefits for your students and classroom.

3. Artists and Writers

Writer’s or artist’s block is a real thing affecting even the most prolific artisans among us. But what most writers and artists don’t know is that meditation – in a sense, the art of doing nothing – can be just as effective in sparking creativity as actively working. Time spent meditating is rewarding downtime for anyone – but artists especially. Making the time to unplug and connect with the Greater Mind puts the artist in touch with ideas he or she hadn’t thought of and allows them to process emotional gunk, which could be hampering his or her creative abilities.

4. Students

If you’ve spent time with a student lately, you know many of today’s school environments aren’t for the faint of heart. Students are expected to do ever-increasing amounts of homework and to saddle real life responsibilities at younger and younger ages. Unfortunately, the competition to get into a top college is also fierce. Thankfully, research shows daily meditation reduces stress, and aids students with focus, organization, and concentration.

5. Business Owners

As a business owner myself, I know how intense it can be – and how challenging it is to “turn it off” sometimes. I also understand the importance of not burning out, taking time to vision for the future, and balancing work, play and family. It can be exhausting if careful consideration isn’t taken to keep things in alignment. Of all the categories of people I work with, I find business owners are the most standoff-ish about meditation initially, but end up reaping the most rewards from it.
