How to Handle Change Like a Boss

Change is inevitable.

It’s unavoidable.

It can’t be resisted.

As one of the great mysteries of the human condition, change is paradoxical in that it is necessary for growth, yet we are creatures of habit.

It feels good for us to be in a routine, to feel secure and comfortable – especially if we have what we want.

Ironically, it is in those moments that the winds of change begin blowing in.

If you’re someone who fears change or feels insecure or uncertain before a change takes place, you probably experience anxiety when change comes knocking at your door.

If this describes you, don’t sweat it; fear of change is relatively common – as is a little bit of anxiety about it, too.

Those who embrace change, however, are typically rewarded handsomely for it – making the practice of embracing and welcoming change attractive, powerful, and profitable, too.

Luckily, the Universe didn’t leave those who wrangle with change empty-handed; there are plenty of ways to smooth out and ease the discomfort, agony and fear change can bring.

I’ve put together a list of 4 of my favorites below.

Change Tip #1. Take a rest.

Although it may seem counter-intuitive, one of the best things you can do while going through a change is rest. Because change forces people outside their comfort zones, it automatically makes us more vulnerable to “fight or flight” mode – a condition which can leave you feeling weary and drained – and in need of rest and recuperation. Don’t worry if taking a rest feels foreign to you many people – myself included at times – become so ingrained in the daily rush of life that any disruption to its fast pace can throw them off. Having unexpected free time can also trigger guilt, uncertainty, and anxiety – all of which is understandable if we are accustomed to doing things at a fast and furious pace. If you find yourself dealing with any of these the next time you have some free time, handle it by doing what’s listed under #3 here, and then use the free time to mentally, physically and spiritually rest and recover. If you’d like to take the concept of rest further in your life or you find you don’t know “how” to rest or relax, try my Calming Lavender Light Meditation here.

Change Tip #2: Meditate.

People who are often the most bothered by not knowing what is coming next – as is the case with most changes – are those with an action-oriented, Yang-dominant personality. These types of people often operate under a mentality that pushing forward is always the answer. Unfortunately, we live in a world of duality and harder is not always better. Furthermore, applying force or demanding action or answers doesn’t always yield results and can lead to frustration, anger, and burnout. Sometimes, we need to step back and listen, instead. One of the easiest ways to do this is to meditate. Meditation in itself is taking the time to listen for the Universe’s guidance. Besides opening yourself up to Divine Guidance, meditation will help you relax and be patient while waiting for your next steps to reveal themselves. Meditation also helps quell impatience, nervousness, and restlessness. If you’re looking to learn to meditate, you don’t need to go far to do it. I am a meditation expert and have a slew of guided meditations available here. You don’t need a fancy class to get started, either; simply download a guided meditation, find a quiet spot, and have at it.

Change Tip #3: Release the old.

If you’re aware that clutter causes stress – which it does – then you won’t be surprised to know one of the best ways to keep anxiety and stress under control during a life change is clean up your space. To do this, reflect on what no longer serves you in your life and make a plan to let it go. If your home, office, or car is cluttered up with so much stuff that you feel drained or down whenever you’re there, take some time to declutter. If thoughts of fear, doubt, or insecurity plague your mind every morning before you get out of bed, clear things out by journaling or talking to a trusted friend, therapist, or someone else in the morning and/or in the evening before bed. If you’ve done all these things or are looking for clutter-clearing on an energetic level, check out my Cord Cutting and Shielding MeditationAnger Releasing Meditation or Root Chakra Clearing Meditation. All 3 cost under $10 each, require little effort from you and can help you release a massive amount of old energy in one sitting.

Change Tip # 4. Wear black.

A color of power and strength, black is also traditionally the color of mourning – making it a great choice for times when something has died off in our lives and we’re entering a new phase. As the combination of all the colors and the absence of all light, black helps us embrace confusion while fostering confidence in the unknown. Ready for another great benefit? Black also absorbs negative energy – something that often accompanies major life shifts. If, like me, you prefer not to wear black clothing all the time, try carrying a black gemstone like jetblack obsidian, or black tourmaline with you while you’re going through a change.

So there you have it: 4 ways to handle change like a boss.
