9 Tricks for Getting Grounded Fast

Do you ever feel ungrounded?

It’s an uncomfortable thing.

Feeling ungrounded sometimes means difficulty concentrating.

It can also mean feeling worried, anxious or “in your head”.

You may experience obsessive thinking or feel uncertain, skeptical, or insecure.

As an introvert and a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), I am aware of change and feel it on a cellular level; this fact means I spent chunks of my childhood and adult life in an ungrounded state. I often unknowingly soaked up other people’s negative energy or fears and became ungrounded as a result. As you might imagine, my moods constantly changed based on my environment. Thankfully I learned some tricks to deal with this.

Not everyone feels things as deeply and intensely as HSPs, but all humans feel ungrounded at times. Major life stresses, changes to schedules and routines can all result in a feeling of ungroundedness. A key to successful living is learning about yourself and your tendencies and adapting. With that in mind, consider this:

Do you know what makes you ungrounded?

Do you know how to handle it when it happens?

If not, consider one of the following 9 tricks for getting grounded fast:

1. Do a grounding meditation. Find a quiet place to relax. Sit in a chair with your bare feet flat on the floor. This helps you connect your energy to the Earth. Close your eyes and breath slowly and deeply. Imagine you are a tree and roots coming out of your feet and going deep into the ground.

2. Spend time around mature trees. With their strength and deep roots, trees are naturally grounding Earth elements.

3. Walk barefoot in the grass. Yet another way to connect with the earth.

4. Journal. Grab a journal, set a timer for five minutes and address your thoughts and feelings head on.

5. Do yoga. Asanas – poses like Tree and Mountain – are perfect for grounding.

6. Carry black tourmaline. A favorite stone of energy workers and meta-physicians alike, this stone is known for its grounding properties. It also helps neutralize negative thoughts.

7. Use color. Red and brown are excellent colors to use when feeling ungrounded. They connect you to the Earth. Wear a red or brown shirt or socks, or just close your eyes and think of the color in your mind. For more on color, check out this quick video for simple secrets to use color to banish low energy, heal from grief and a host of other things:

8. Eat root vegetables. Add carrots, beets or potatoes to your diet for some extra grounding support.

9. Use the affirmation above. “I am strong and grounded. I am safe.”

So there you have it; 9 tricks for getting grounded fast. Do you have any favorite grounding techniques I missed?

This article was on my mind today during yoga. I kept falling out of tree pose so I imagined roots extending from my feet into the floor!

    HI Jaime,
This is Barb in France ( we chatted on e-mail recently!) 🙂
This is a timely post for me. Hurrah!
I have been learning about the chakras and have been working with the root chakra. I have adopted some basic asanas. I also listen to music that activates the chakras.
I can relate to your story. I have been a long-time introvert and highly anxious throughout most of my adult life. I notice that the root chakra work has helped. I feel less nervous.

Thank you and see you soon.

Hi, Barb! YES!!!! Feeling ungrounded is completely root chakra-related. Great suggestion on the chakra music, too. I have an awesome app for that on my phone and have been doing the same recently, too. I appreciate your comment so much. Thank you for reading my posts!

I used to think that I was good with change and routine was not for me. As it turns out, daily routine keeps me grounded. I realized this over this last couple weeks and the holidays. I’m grateful for the holidays and added time with family but I am also grateful for my normal routine and am looking forward to getting back to that!
