9 Easy (and Awesome) Ways to Release Negative Energy

Do you ever wish you knew some easy ways to release negative energy?
If you’re an empath or Highly Sensitive Person, my guess is you do. That’s because people who identify with these personality types are highly susceptible to the energy around them. And, unless you want to be stuck in negativity (trust me, you don’t), you need to find a way to release it.

Shielding Isn’t Enough

If you are sensitive or empathic, you may do some kind of energy shielding to protect your energy.
If you don’t, you probably know, at least on an intuitive level, to avoid or limit your interactions with certain people and situations that drain or hurt you. Am I right?
And while all of that is well and good and totally necessary if you’re highly sensitive, it isn’t 100% fool-proof. Sometimes we forget. Some people’s energies are stronger than others. And, if you’re under stress, you may be more susceptible to other people’s energies. Given these things, even the most experienced empath or HSP will still pick-up negative energies at times.

There is Hope

Being sensitive is a gift. The fact that you can feel and absorb other people’s energies doesn’t mean you are weak or defective; it means you are open, trusting and special! It also means that you have a genuine need to learn how to release negative or unwanted energy, so you can feel light, easy and joyful.  
As a fellow empath and lightworker, I know exactly what it feels like to wake up in the middle of the night with anxiety about someone else’s problems. I know what it feels like to carry burdens that aren’t mine. And I also know how hard it is to give a struggling person some great solutions and have them do nothing. It’s exhausting, frustrating, scary, and many other things.
Like you, I’ve been through my share of challenges – especially as an empath. The blessing in it for me though is I’m much stronger today and I’ve learned a lot. 
In that spirit, I’m excited to share 9 of my favorite methods for releasing negative energy with you today. My hope is one or more of these tricks will help you keep your energy clear so you can feel happy, joyous and free.

9 Easy (and Awesome) Ways to Release Negative Energy

Release Method #1: Salt.

One of the most time-tested and readily available ways to cleanse yourself of negative energy is with salt. Although regular old table salt will do, I encourage clients, students, and you to use Pink Himalayan salt or sea salt.
Methods for clearing your energy with salt include salt baths, sprinkling salt in a circle around you, or these other options.
Near the ocean or a salt water pool? Take a dip and imagine that bad energy washing away from you.
A neti pot is another way to cleanse with salt and is particularly helpful for clearing negative thoughts and memories. As it cleanses the nose, throat, sinus passages and third eye, using a neti pot with salt helps release imprints of falsehoods that have been spoken or acted out toward you.

Release Method #2: High Vibration Music.

Whether it’s drum beats, pop tunes, or singing bowls, high vibration sounds are one of the best ways to free yourself from negative energy.
Because of music’s natural ability to bypass the ego, this negative cleanser can shift your mood instantly.
Thanks to the lightning-fast speed of the Internet and oodles of free online music, one needn’t go far to quickly release negative energy.

Release Method #3: Meditation.

I’m a huge fan of meditation; it’s monumentally changed my life. Besides the oft-mentioned, science-backed plusses of this ancient practice, meditation squashed my anxiety, helped me develop self-confidence, and has made me into a darn good psychic, intuitive, and medium.
Whether used for chakra clearing, cord cutting, or grounding, some form of meditation belongs in your routine.

Release Method #4: Crystals.

The Earth is ripe with treasures – as evidenced by the gorgeous storehouse of crystals Mother Earth has created.
Along with serving as decorative pieces and jewelry, certain crystals are also excellent eliminators of negative energy.
When it comes to clearing “bad vibes” from yourself or your home, reach for Black Obsidian,  Jet, Lava Rock, and Black Tourmaline.
Smokey Quartz,and Selenite are also helpful for clearing. Further, Green Calcite and Serpentine are also known for their releasing properties.
If your aim is to deflect negative energy before you absorb it, your best bet is Hematite or Labradorite, which will bounce unwanted energies away from you.

Release Method #5: Reiki.

If you’ve never heard of Reiki, you won’t be in the dark for long; this 90-year-old complementary healing therapy is popping up everywhere these days.
Described as a “spiritual healing art from Japan” by the International Association of Reiki Professionals® (IARP), Reiki is neither a massage nor a religious practice.
“Reiki is an energy frequency that releases energetic blockages,” says Lourdes Lebron, a Reiki Master, Intuitive, and Crystal Healer who provides distance Reiki.
“Negative energy is often stagnant energy (blocked energy),” Lebron says. “(It) gets dispersed when it comes into contact with Reiki.”
With thousands of hospitals, spas, and private practices now offering Reiki, it’s becoming easier to find, too.

Release Method #6: Deities.

When it comes to ridding yourself of negative energy, there are several deities that can help you.
Archangel Michael, with his sword of light, blasts through fear and negativity. He is enormously powerful and supportive – especially when extra protection or strength is needed.
Kali, the Hindu goddess who banishes fears, will also aid in matters like this.
If stubborn obstacles seem to keep getting in your way, Nikki, owner of Sol Path Tarot and Crystal Magik and an expert on deities, suggests calling on Ganesha.
“He [Ganesh] is very generous and is a gatekeeper/remover of obstacles. So if negative energy buildup is holding you back, he can help remove it.”
Nikki also recommends Archangel Raphael for negative energy clearing:
“Even though he [Raphael] is typically used for healing, he is also a skilled banisher so it would be appropriate to ask him to clear your body or home from negative energy buildup,” she says.

Negative Energy Release Method #7: Massage.

No list of easy ways to release unwanted energy would be complete without massage, an effective stress-relieving therapy.
Whether a Swedish massage at a luxury spa, a self-massage at home, or a facial at Kiehl’s, massage offers a definite physical, mental and emotional release.
Here’s what the Mayo Clinic has to say about this complementary therapy:

“Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for another stress reliever. Negative Energy Release Method #8: Aromatherapy.

Whether your choice du jour is lemongrass, clary sage (purchase here), or cedarwood, essential oils are all the rage these days. And it’s no wonder: with roots going back thousands of years, our ancestors knew the power of herbs and plants to heal and cure a variety of things. 

When it comes to clearing yourself of negative vibes, sage, juniper, and palo santo reign supreme for me. Ravensara oil (purchase here), known as a “cure-all” in Madagascar, packs a good punch, too. Negative Energy Release Method #9: Visualize.

If you find yourself tight on time, money or energy, don’t worry; there’s a no-cost, quick fix available, too. For this one, all you need is a few minutes and a somewhat quiet space. (If you can’t find anywhere quiet, though, don’t let it deter you; I’ve used this technique in the middle of Disneyworld as well as a bustling airport.)
Begin by taking 3-4 deep cleansing breaths. To do this, close your eyes and imagine breathing in pure white light. When you exhale, imagine breathing out any worry, fear or insecurity that you feel. Now, direct your attention to your heart center. Imagine there is a key on the outside of your heart, and you are able to turn and open it. As the door to heart opens, imagine seeing the most beautiful, peaceful scene you’ve ever seen, right in front of you. Imagine any worries or doubts flooding out of your heart. See them entirely released from your body and your energy field. Imagine now that you have the ability to open the windows inside your heart, and walk over to one now. Imagine yourself unlatching the lock, and throwing the window open. Feel the expansion and breathe into it. Imagine pink light surrounding your entire heartspace now, and enveloping you in feelings of love, positivity, and peace. Look around your decadent heartspace and see the thousands of roses and other flowers all around you. See the plush, soft fabrics that make up this space, and hear the soft, gentle music that’s playing lightly. Stay in this safe, sacred space for as long as you need to. Allow it to transform the way you feel and to uplift your energy to higher frequencies. When you are finished, you can begin by wiggling your fingers and your toes and rotating your ankles and wrists. Stretch your arms above your head and slowly open your eyes.

Negative Energy, Be Gone!

Although it’s no fun to absorb negative energy, it doesn’t need to run or ruin your day. With techniques like music, meditation, and Reiki, you can break free of negative energy easily – and in the comfort of your own home. Diffusing essential oils, taking a salt bath, or getting a massage are three other ways that also help release unwanted energy.
Whichever method you choose, know that you have the power to break free from unwanted, negative energy.
