When was the last time you got sick?
Did you like it?
My guess is probably not.
But maybe, like me, you’ve been sick recently – and realized the occasional cold or sniffles aren’t all bad.
Not all that bad? you might be thinking.
What’s great about a stuffy nose, a stiff neck, or allergies?
On the surface, and when you’re going through it, usually nothing.
At least at first.
But earlier this week, on about Day 3 of an incredibly painful, 5-day sinus infection, I realized something:
Being sick isn’t all bad.
There are actually quite a few positives hidden in there!
Do you know what they are?
Let’s take a look!
1 – Being sick gives you an excuse to rest. Let’s face it: most of us work waaaaaaaay too hard! If you don’t regularly stop to relax, unwind and nurture yourself, you are probably tired and stressed – which is no good in the long or short run. I don’t care who you are; everyone needs rest and relaxation, even the President of the United States. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how or when to stop. The great news is, the Universe has your back and will intervene if you push yourself too hard.
2 – Being sick is your body’s way of communicating with you. Have you ever had a mysterious illness doctors couldn’t explain? Did you ever wish someone could just tell you? The truth is, someone is telling you … YOU!
What do you mean, Jaime?
I mean that getting sick is your body’s way of communicating with you! Anytime you get sick, your body is telling you that something is off. Sore throat? You’re probably not speaking up about something. Pimples? You were likely mad earlier in the week. Heartburn? You may be afraid or fearful of something.
A few years ago, I began developing a strange sort of edema in my body. I had every test imaginable done – allergies, proteins, hormones – but the doctors couldn’t come up with anything. Then, one day while I was meditating, I heard to look into the book called, “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay. It’s a treasure-trove of information on multiple levels and I highly recommend it. And, it helped me decipher the cause behind my suffering: I needed to let go of certain things!
I was skeptical at first, of course, but over time, I started to see it working. I literally went from swelling episodes several days a week to virtually none at all anymore.
How did it work, exactly?
Whenever I experienced the mysterious swelling I would ask myself: “What do I need to let go of?” and every time I followed through, the swelling would magically go away.
Today I am 100% certain that swelling was a physical manifestation of me “holding onto things” too tightly. It usually indicated a relationship was past due, or it was time to part with a responsibility that wasn’t mine. Sometimes, though, it meant I needed to do some physical clutter-clearing. Which takes me to the next benefit of being sick …
3 – Being sick is cleansing! You know that feeling you get after you clean out an old filing cabinet or your closet? Being sick is like that but on a much larger scale. Often times, colds and viruses help move stagnant, old energy out of the body. Energy you no longer need or use but just wouldn’t budge any other way. And the good thing is, you don’t have to fill up any bags or boxes; your body does the work for you! One thing you do need to do, however, is rest and hydrate yourself; drinking water actually accelerates your healing because it gets things moving again. Think of it as greasing a squeaky wheel.
Being sick isn’t always easy – most times it downright stinks!
And while it’s not always fun to get sick, it’s not all bad when we get the sniffles or a cold. Whether it’s what you need to finally get some rest; it’s your body’s way of communicating something to you; or it helps you clear out the old – being sick can have its positives, too. Remember that the next time you’re not feeling up to par.
That’s all for me this week! But before you go, click here and tell me:
Have you ever thought about the positives of being sick?
I love hearing from you!
Have an awesome week!
Brightly,
Jaime
