3 Easy Ways to Focus on the Good

Do you ever find yourself focusing on the negative traits of the people around you?

For instance, say your spouse or friend did a hundred awesome things for you last week, yet you’re focused on that one little mistake.

Have you ever wondered why this is?

The good news is, it isn’t your fault. Research and scientific evidence shows the human brain is wired to scan for negative things in the environment. It’s a trait humans developed thousands of years ago when living in pure survival mode.

And, there’s more good news: this slant toward negativity can be changed. All it takes is regular practice of looking for and highlighting the good around you.

Do you want more positivity in your life? Here are 3 easy ways to focus on the good:

1. Say today’s affirmation over and over to yourself throughout your day. Go to the mirror and say it there, too. When you find yourself highlighting the negative, stop yourself and say the affirmation again.

2. Grab a sheet of paper and write down 3 good things about yourself. After that, write down 3 things about someone else in your life. Then choose someone else and do it for that person, too. Do this every day, and you’ll start seeing miraculous changes.

3. Take the activity in # 2 above a step further; make a point to look for and find the positive aspects of every person you encounter. Silently acknowledge them in your head or say them aloud by giving compliments to them. In time, you’ll start seeing your focus shift from the negative to the positive.
