Are You Restricting Your Freedoms?

Have you ever thought about what it means to be free?

To have the right to drive a car, to vote, or go into the career field of your choice?

While I love fireworks, apple pie and barbecues, my favorite part of celebrating the Fourth of July is thinking about the freedoms I have as an American. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying America is without flaws, but really – the freedoms here and in other developed countries are truly amazing.

As I was reflecting on Independence Day earlier this week, I was struck by something, though; some Americans – myself included, at times – don’t take full advantage of these freedoms.

In some cases, we may even hold ourselves back from being free.

Why would anyone do such a thing?, you may be thinking.

I don’t think anyone holds themselves back consciously. I know I sure don’t. Yet, there are areas in my life where it is almost as if I put up a glass ceiling above my head.

Can you relate?

Before we move on any further, I want you to take a moment and imagine something with me.

Take a deep breath in and out and relax your body.

Now, consider you live in a country where your freedoms are restricted.

Let’s pretend there is a law forbidding you to go on a vacation, and another one that says you can’t move out of your house.

A third law says you can never end a relationship – even if the other person belittles you, hurts you or abuses you.

Okay, now take a deep breath and come back to reality and this time and space.

When you think about the exercise I just took you through, what did you think?
My guess was you felt restricted and probably didn’t like the idea of not being able to do certain things, like take a vacation, move, or end a toxic relationship.

Yet, have you ever found yourself holding yourself back from doing these things?

Why do you think that is?

Sometimes, the realization that we are holding ourselves back in certain areas can be enough to get ourselves moving foward. Other times, we need to sit with the awareness, move into acceptance, and then take action.

Before I go today, I’d love to know:

Are you holding yourself back anywhere in your life?

What could you do to move yourself forward?
